Open source coding agents, in one useful list.

Filter terminal agents, IDE extensions, autonomous platforms and task-specific tools. Every card links to the official GitHub repository; archived projects are labeled instead of quietly disappearing.

SELECTION METHOD

Choose with four questions, not one ranking

A single “best” list hides the trade-offs that matter in daily use.

01

Where should it run?

Choose CLI for composability, IDE for in-editor approvals, or a platform when you need isolated and long-running work.

02

Which models can it use?

Check whether the agent supports one provider, multiple APIs, local models or your own keys.

03

What can it change?

Read the approval, sandbox, terminal and Git behavior before granting access to a real repository.

04

Is the license usable?

An available source tree is not automatically open source. Review the repository license and any enterprise-only directories.

BEYOND THE REPOSITORY

Give a coding agent a browser work surface

Coding agents are strongest inside files, terminals and Git. Tabbit extends the workflow to webpages, tabs and browser actions without pretending to be one of the open-source agents above.

01

Operate real web interfaces

Use the browser agent for clicks, forms and web apps when a repository task crosses into an admin console or spreadsheet.

02

Collect across several sites

Gather source material from multiple pages before the coding agent turns it into code, documentation or a report.

03

Read the current page as context

Summarize a specification, issue or documentation page without moving the work into a disconnected chat.

SCOPE AND LICENSES

Why some familiar tools are not in the active list

This directory requires a public GitHub repository, a coding-related agent loop and a license that can be reviewed. It also separates active work from archived repositories.

Source available ≠ open source. Always read the current LICENSE file before adopting a project.

Checked but excluded from the open-source catalog

Crush and GPT Pilot

They currently use the Functional Source License with a future MIT conversion date.

Claude Code and GitHub Copilot CLI

Their repositories do not declare a recognized open-source license.

Zed

It is an open-source editor with agent features, not a standalone coding agent.

* Tabby labels its core Apache-2.0 while enterprise-only directories use separate terms.

FAQ

Short answers before you install

01What is an open source coding agent?

It is software whose agent loop and relevant source code are published under an open-source license, and which can inspect, edit, run or review code with some degree of autonomy.

02Which open source coding agent is best?

For terminal work, start with OpenCode, Aider, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI or Qwen Code based on model and Git needs. For IDE work, compare Cline, Continue and Kilo Code. For isolated autonomous jobs, evaluate OpenHands or SWE-agent.

03Are all GitHub coding agents open source?

No. Public source can still carry a source-available or proprietary license. Check the LICENSE file, archive state and any separately licensed directories.

04Can these agents use local models?

Some can. Provider-flexible tools such as OpenCode, goose, Continue and Open Interpreter are the first projects to check, but supported backends change by release.

CODE MEETS THE WEB

Keep the coding agent. Add a browser it can work with.

Use Tabbit for the web pages, tabs and browser actions that sit outside the repository.
